SIR - I agree with your correspondent's remarks about the stupid speed bumps reinstalled in Highbury Road, Hitchin, highlighted in The Comet on April 12.
Whilst they will do no harm to the suspension of cars, the more worrying aspect is the serious effect they will have on the steering. I do not know whether these were installed by council employees or an outside firm, but they have been very badly constructed. On driving over bumps, the front wheels of a car are pulled in opposite directions and this is bound to create a strain on the steering, and the axles would also be affected. Anyone using this road regularly should be mindful of these effects as they could have serious consequences.
A few years ago I wrote to the district road engineer and suggested that if traffic calming measures were necessary in Highbury Road, then the raised portions should extend over the whole width of the road. Apparently he did not consider this to be a good idea, as witness the reinstallation of the individual humps.
