SIR - There has been a lot of comment recently on a third lane for the A1(M). But do we really need this? That kind of money would be better spent on making the railway line between Knebworth and Welwyn Garden City a four track. Then a much improved rail service could be offered taking cars off the road.

Maybe we should look on the car much the same way that people did the pony and trap a hundred years ago, only for short journeys. With a much improved service the railways could be used for longer journeys. With buses meeting the trains to take people on to where they want to go.

If we wish to cut carbon emissions all of us will have to be willing to use public transport far more than we do now; but this does mean that the public transport will have to be in place for us to use.
