SIR - Thank you, Damion Roberts, for printing the article on Hitchin Forum's campaign to clean up the town's streets.
North Herts District Council is not doing enough to keep our streets, grass verges, footpaths and hedgerows clear of litter. Nor does it empty litter bins frequently enough; there appears to be a demarcation between which department empties which type of litter bin, thus no joined-up policy!
I have received correspondence from two local councillors who are addressing my concerns. I am informed that the streets are swept once every four weeks, in my opinion not frequently enough, but this operation does not remove litter from grass verges, footpaths and hedgerows, which so disfigures our countryside. The litter which has been allowed to collect at the end of the footpath adjacent to where the A1 crosses over Hitchin Street leading out of Baldock is a particular eyesore.
When I drive through neighbouring counties I see staff litter-picking along main roads and motorways but never in Hertfordshire.
I hope your campaign to clear our towns and countryside of litter will be successful.
