SIR - I moved to Hitchin 35 years ago. It was described as a small but thriving market town. Local radio advertisements use to say visit Hitchin Market with over 350 stalls.

How that has changed with 35 stalls at the most. Rubbish bins overflow and rats are a common sight at the back of St Mary's Church. The toilets are diabolical, lighting is inadequate and rain pours off the corners of the stalls. NHDC does absolutely nothing to help and shows no interest whatsoever. This obviously results in much less shoppers, less stalls, decline, decline and further decay.

The farmers' market should be separate. The fare is too expensive! Keep the market location in the same place. NHDC, an injection of capital is a priority, improve stalls, invite more stalls, improve rubbish removal, improve both lighting and parking, and improve the access for wheelchairs and build new toilets. Make Hitchin once more a thriving market town.
