I read with interest the article in last week's Comet 'Driver's fury at pothole cost' as for some time I have noticed what a dreadful condition a large number of roads in Letchworth are in. One of the most noticeable being the section of the The Broadway leading from the A505 to the Broadway Gardens - a main thoroughfare to the town, and the centrepiece fountain. A truly impresssive welcome to the garden city!
We are being asked to report potholes or other road damage to Hertsdirect - highway faults as it seems HCC will only accept responsibility for damage to vehicles if they are previously aware of the particular defects/potholes concerned - what a cop-out of responsibilities that is.
However as it seems to me that the majority of the roads I use in the town have deteriorated and have potholes or varying depths and sizes - perhaps it would be easier for us to report the roads that are in good repair with no potholes!
We are told that there is a minimum budget for road resurfacing and that potholes will be filled in, presumably as a temporary measure. With an election pending perhaps we should be asking our councillors questions with regard to this appalling state of affairs which represents yet another decline in standards.
