A master of the harmonica who has played with Kate Bush, Van Morrison and Shirley Bassey and an exciting multi-instrumentalist - both winners at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards awards last night - will be in Hitchin at the weekend.
Brendan Power, who was voted harmonica player of the year in 2011 by the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica, no less, will be performing his unique playing style at Hitchin Folk Club on Sunday night.
Club organiser Keiron Jones said the UK-based New Zealander is one of the most creative players around today on both blues harp and chromatic harmonica, tuning them to his own scales to create an original style.
He added: “Since he moved to Britain in 1992, Brendan’s eclectic skills and sympathetic ear have made him an in-demand session player, leading to live and recording work with artists such as Kate Bush on her latest album Director’s Cut, Sting, Van Morrison, James Galway, Paul Young, Shirley Bassey, John Williams, Mike Batt and many more.
“His playing is also heard on many Hollywood movie soundtracks such as the 2008 Oscar winning soundtrack for Atonement, and BBC TV series including Billy Connelly in Canada and Bruce Parry’s Arctic Series. He’s also featured on the Jools Holland Show and toured worldwide, performing in venues such as China’s Great Hall of the People and The Kremlin.”
Accompanying Brendan will be 31-year-old multi-instrumentalist Tim Edey. Equally at home on guitar, melodeon, accordion, banjo, bass, piano, mandolin, whistle, bodhran and bouzouki, he is making a big imprssion on the Celtic music scene.
Both musicians won gongs at Wednesday night’s prestigious BBC2 British Folk Awards, Tim in the Best Musician category, and the pair for Best Duo - so the boys are certainly going to be on a high.
Support is from sweet singer and guitarist Carolyn Sheppard.
The event takes place at The Sun Hotel from 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 for members and £14 for non, best bought in advance by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
