Boro boss Graham Westley believes the club has signed "one hell of a player" in the form of Joel Byrom from Northwich Victoria.

The 22-year-old completed a £15,000 move to The Lamex Stadium last month after the club had been keeping tabs on the midfielder for several months thanks to Dino Maamria's connections with the player.

Byrom played a key role in hauling the Vics away from the Blue Square Premier relegation zone during the Tunisian's reign at The Victoria Stadium and Westley believes the former Clitheroe man can make a real impact in his new surroundings.

"We were fortunate to have the inside track over what was happening with Joel thanks to Dino's connections with Northwich Victoria," said Westley, who tried to sign Byrom in January but found the Vics unwilling to part with their prized asset.

"He was massively influential in what Dino did there. He had a very difficult year last year through injury but you could see the kind of impact he has when he came back and Northwich won their last six league games."

Byrom, who was part of the England C squad alongside Boro defender Scott Laird, has carved out a reputation as a creative midfielder with a cultured left foot able to open up opposition defences.

The acquisition of a left-footer will also give the squad more balance although Westley does not expect the deploy Byrom as a winger.

"The left side is not his natural position. If Stacy (Long) joins us then he can play down the left as well.

"But Joel is very creative going forward and is going to be one hell of a player. I was delighted to secure his signature as he is a real talent."

Meanwhile, Peterborough have confirmed they will travel to The Lamex Stadium on Tuesday, July 28 for a pre-season friendly to face Westley's men. Kick off will be at 7.45pm.
