NOBEL School pupil Tom Harris has suffered a setback in his Karting season after breaking his collarbone in the last round of the Formula Kart Stars British Championship.

The reigning Hoddesdon Kart Club 2-Stroke Cadet Champion was involved in a serious accident and will now miss the next round of the FKS in Belgium.

The accident occurred during very wet conditions when a kart ahead of Tom had spun into his path and, unable to avoid it, Tom's kart was launched into the air before landing upside down with Tom trapped underneath.

Tom said: "I remember the initial contact, but then I can only remember looking out from the side of the kart once it had stopped and seeing the spectators looking at me. I felt something hot on my shoulder and shouted for help and I was later told the exhaust was burning through my suit!"

After the race was stopped, paramedics set to work to stabilise Tom and he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

Tom's father Ian added: "The incident is one of the worst I'd seen but his safety equipment may have prevented a more serious injury and luckily the other driver involved had only minor bruising.

"Despite this setback, Tom is keen to get back to his racing but we'll ensure he is fully fit and up to strength with some track testing before returning to competitive racing later this year. Now that Tom is on the mend I need to repair his kart and replace his safety equipment damaged in the accident."
