Hitchin fighter Tom Ansell is set for another bout at the East End of London’s world famous York Hall this Friday June – and he dropped by David Haye’s London gym to catch up with the big man.
The highly-rated 25-year-old former welterweight – now super lightweight – has been training hard for his fourth fight as a professional, against ‘Fonz’ Alexander as part of a high-profile evening in Bethnal Green.
He will be looking to continue his superb start in the sweet science and grab a fourth win on the bounce when he enters the ring as part of a televised show under Hayemaker promotions on the Joe Joyce undercard later this week.
The Hitchin-hotshot told CometSport: “It was great to catch up with David at his Vauxhall gym. He was a real gent.
“Some people might have though he was a bit cocky in the build-up before big fights but that’s not the real David. He’s a really good guy and wished me luck for the fight. I can’t wait.”
The eagerly-awaited bout will be Ansell’s first under new trainer Tony Pill at Dereck Chisora’s Mill Hill gym after previously working with trainer Mark Massow.
Ansell explained the change was because of issues in scheduling training with the Chelmsford-based Massow, adding that while he was sad to leave Massow, who had been with him during his trio of pro victories, he was savouring the new regime.
CometSport was there to catch the Hitchin-hotshot achieving victory after his third professional fight at a raucous York Hall by beating the experienced Bulgarian Radoslav Mitev in March – after the former Letchworth rugby player-turned boxer outpointed his 5ft 9in Sofia-born opponent after tough four rounds in Bethnal Green.
The performance helped Ansell join a show promoted by former heavyweight world champion David Haye and is being headlined by current Commonwealth heavyweight champion Joe Joyce.
Ansell’s fight will also be screened on the DAVE television channel.
Speaking to CometSport Ansell is pleased to be able to perform in front of a wide audience ahead of a potential title shot himself.
He said: “I met David Haye at the last show I did under him and I’ve heard he said he was impressed with me and liked my style.
“It made sense to drop down to super lightweight. I won’t be moving down again but I do have plans to be become a multi-weight champion.”
Ansell is also looking forward to sampling the special atmosphere at York Hall again, adding: “Everyone’s on top of you everyone’s so excited - it’s a true boxing venue and it’s always an honour to fight there.”
Ansell is also rapidly gaining a reputation for bringing passionate support with him which includes a large number of his former rugby team-mates at Letchworth.
