A taekwondo club in Stevenage is celebrating after landing a haul of medals at a prestigious national tournament – including producing a British Champion!

Powelly Tae Kwon-Do based at Nobel School had 13 competitors competing at The Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain Championships in Birmingham – and they did their club proud.

Tina Bhoobun from the town is now a British Champion in sparring after winning the national title.

In total the talented group came home with 13 medals – three silvers and a bronze in sparring, a bronze in ‘pattern’ and a silver in the ‘tag-team’ competition.

A delighted Tina told CometSport: “Everyone is still buzzing from the fantastic weekend we had.

“Our coach John Powell is incredibly proud of everyone competed.

“Everyone has worked really hard leading to the competition, The extra sparring classes laid on by John – known as ‘Sir’ in Taekwondo – has proven to be very popular.

“There were 1,500 competitors at the British Championships and it’s a great honour the Powell club managed to come back with medals.

“I feel extremely happy and proud to be part of the Powell team, winning the championships two years in a row is a great achievement and this is only due to the dedication and hard work of my amazing instructor ‘Sir’ John.”

The group built on the success they achieved at the British Taekwondo Southeast Championships as the best club two months ago – after claiming an impressive ten gold medals as they fought off more than 100 clubs.

Tina added: “‘Sir’ John has always put his hard work an dedication to make us all the best we can be.

“The club is a lovely place to train and we have some great sparer which Sir Powell has created.

“It would strongly recommend anyone to give the Powell club a go, it is a lovely family club.

If you are interested in learning more or even trying the sport then The Nobel School hosts three classes, U-16s on Tuesday from 6pm to 6.45 pm, with a family club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm.
