Rounds of 69, 72, 68, and 70 gave him a 9-under total of 279, which was three shots behind the winner, local golfer Patricio Alzamora.

Rutherford, from Knebworth and a member of the England A Squad, was one of only nine players to finish under par.

His team mate in the event was Surrey’s Greg Payne, who finished on nine over.

The format for the Lima International is 72 holes of stroke play with both players’ scores counting over all four rounds for the team event.

The pair finished second on level par - some 15 shots behind the Peruvian winners, but six shots clear of third place.
