The progressive club that promotes the cause of women’s rugby were shocked to see the American rapper share their naked calendar with nearly 40 million of his followers who liked his Facebook page last year.

With the calendar aimed at raising funds and awareness that will allow the club to progress the development of the women’s game – as well as helping GB Wheelchair Rugby – the squad are hoping for something similar this time around.

Club stalwart Claire Crompton, who plays inside-centre, spoke exclusively to CometSport, as she underlined that the calendars also promote female empowerment.

She said: “We decided to do the calendar again for a number of reasons.

“We made a lot of money last year and wanted to do the same again to help a great cause GB Wheelchair Rugby with some money of the money we hope to raise going to the rugby club.

“Last year we got so much positive feedback from people because we showed real women in a tasteful way.

“So many people bought calendars for their sons, their daughters and their sisters as it had the opposite effect of the usual stereotyped images of supermodels.

“It helped us as women to be more confident in what we have and everyone involved had such a positive experience.

“It was great exposure for our club, our team and women’s rugby in general.”

The club are on the rise and are noted for playing great rugby. They also won the plate at Magaluf Beach 5s in April, as well as the Comet newspaper’s Team of the Year and are pushing for promotion this year with their ever-growing squad of more than 30 women.

The club which is celebrating its 25th year had been down to six players only a few seasons ago but is once again thriving. ‘We’ve had some peaks and troughs over the years’ said Claire, ‘but we seem to be on a high again now.”

The team are having a launch party at the popular Victoria Pub in Iclkeford Road in Hitchin on Friday, October 27 where fans will be able to meet the team, buy a calendar and join up.

Claire added: “This year we have seven new bottoms featured along with nine you might recognise from last year – now that’s a challenge.

“One player told us: ‘I didn’t do it last year because I didn’t have the confidence but seeing how it made everyone else feel and them showing that there is nothing to be ashamed of made me want to be involved this time around’.

“So now everyone can see that we are all fab and have great bums!

“We look forward to seeing as many people as possible at our launch and to buy our calendar – and who knows, maybe even get talked into trying out rugby of the clothed kind.”

Claire adds that this year the calendars are better quality with bigger images but still only cost £10.
