Hitchin Ladies Rugby Club 80-15 Kilburn Cosmos
PUBLISHED: 01:15 06 December 2017 | UPDATED: 01:15 06 December 2017
Kilburn Cosmos begun the match with 10 players, which Hitchin matched in good sporting spirits.
Hitchin Ladies were off to a strong start with a clean catch from the kick off.
They worked well, crashing the ball up and creating space for their nippy centres to ship the ball out wide. This truly was a team game, with the forwards creating space and some lovely decisions and lines from the backs. Kilburn Cosmos were hot on the tail, chasing each runner down to the try line.
Beth Saunders scored four tries, with Emma Cooke also finding some lovely gaps to score centrally for kicker, Rachael Groves to complete.
Some lovely phase work by the forwards brought Hitchin back towards their try line, with Emma Cramphorn, Hitchin skipper, making some lovely ground to allow Jade Cooper to bust through the line and score. Kilburn kept chasing and resetting in defence, only to be broken through once more by Amy Haughton with her power and strength diving over the line. A special mention to Rachael Groves for converting all seven tries in this first half to make the score at the interval 63-0.
The second half brought on a whole new Hitchin team of 10, as Hitchin’s recent recruitment, thanks to the ongoing support of local structural engineering firm, Mason Navarro Pledge, has seen the team grow to many regular players all developing skills very swiftly throughout this year.
A debut from Abbie Macmillan-Jones saw her make a great first break down the far wing, supported by her team mates.
Both halves of the match saw great support running and decision making from Hitchin to create the space for their backs. Kilburn had a great moment whereby their scrum half stole the ball straight out of the Hitchin 9’s hands, and they managed to run this through down the wing with their pacy 12.
Set back to the start line and Hitchin and Kilburn were both putting up a great fight, with a few turned over balls by Alex Tasko and Kilburn alike.
Hitchin managed to make a break and winger, Lauren Bellinger took the ball across the line to score for Hitchin. Stevens converted the try and Hitchin were back to keeping possession of the ball.
Macmillan-Jones, on her debut, made a great run after some excellent phase work from the forwards, and large hits by Stevens, to score the final try of the match.
A great spirited game from both sides, with some lovely moments of simple and effective rugby.
A Christmas Fair preceded the match to raise money for Hitchin Ladies team – bringing in nearly £300.
They would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support!
