HAVING beaten Kent in the London & South East final to win the Jason Leonard Cup, Hertfordshire Stags will travel to meet Yorkshire on Sunday (April 15) in the semi-final of the RFU National U20 Championship.

The match will take place at Hull RUFC’s Ferens Ground with a 2.15pm kick off as the Stags look to continue their most successful season since the inception of the U20 Championship 12 years ago.

It follows the proud tradition of the Hertfordshire U19 side that twice reached the final of the former RFU U19 County Championship.

Under the guidance of lead coach Peter Engledow and his assistants Marcus Cattell and James Coles, the team made a slow start when they lost their first match to Sussex 18 – 16, but quickly went from strength to strength.

Herts won their pool by defeating Surrey by 50-8 at Bishop’s Stortford and Hampshire 24-7 away at Basingstoke. A 22-5 win over Eastern Counties in the Divisional semi finals took them to the London & South East final against Kent whom they beat 31-27 with a try in the last minute.

John Saunders, Hertfordshire Stags’ team manager, said: “We are very proud of the Stags as the first Herts RFU County U20 side to win the London & South East Divisional Championship.

“This is a testament to the commitment of my coaching team and the players all of whom have been outstanding.

“We look forward to the national semi final against Yorkshire. It will be a hard test for a squad of young players who I am sure will do their county proud.”

The other semi final sees reigning National U20 champions Gloucestershire host Leicestershire at Lydney.

And the winners from Sunday’s ties will meet in the final at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Stadium on Sunday, May 13.
