Spartan quartet win bronze county prize

Jo Laing, Kerry James, Claire Pullen and Nikki Andrews in action at Standalone 10K

Spartans Jo Laing, Kerry James, Claire Pullen and Nikki Andrews won county bronze medals for being third women’s team in the Hertfordshire County Championships which were incorporated in Sunday’s Standalone 10K race.

A turnout of 62 Spartans ran the race including five in under 40 minutes: Craig Halsey, 11th in 35 minutes 48 seconds; Simon Jackson, 13th in 36:04; Chris Westcott, 38th in a personal best (PB) of 38:31; John Herd, 48th in a PB of 39:21; Liam Herbert, 53rd in a PB of 39:39.

The medal winning women’s times were: Jo Laing, 75th in 41:26; Kerry James, 129th in 43:41; Claire Pullen, 184th in 45:57; Nikki Andrews, 204th in 46:38.

Many other Spartans achieved personal bests including Stephen Green (44:33) and Steve Elder (44:55). Several others including David Moss (44:10) and Karen Ellis (54:53) were running their first ever 10K race.

Six Spartans ran the Flower of Suffolk Off Road Marathon from Walberswick near Southwold.

Carol Paul finished in 5:25:05, Roger Biggs in 5:40:48, Mike Newbitt in 6:00:09, Rob Hardy in 6:14:56. Kevin Lawlor and Dave Paul finished together in 6:24:30.

On Saturday Shaw Pye took part in the JW Ultra event which covers 30mile from Stratford to Bourneville. He finished third in 3:50:07.

Richard Sidlin took part in the Abbotts Langley Tough 10 event. Despite the weather and the challenging course, he finished in 45:48s. Medals were presented by ex-England manager Graham Taylor.
