Spartan runners posted some impressive times as 15 took part in the Vitality Big Half in London.

More than 11,000 runners took to the streets of the capital to run the race – which started at Tower Bridge and ended near the Cutty Sark in Greenwich – with four Spartans finishing inside the top 1,000.

Martin Blackburn was the first Spartan to cross the finish line in a time of 1:29:12, closely followed by Stuart Haycroft in 1:29:18, Tim Saban in 1:30:23 – a personal best time – and Mark Collins in 1:31:30.

Erica Grayson (1:54:44) and Ella Gower (2:30:07) also ran personal bests, while Yuko Gordon finished fastest in her age group with a time of 1:37:55.

Emma Martin was the last Spartan to finish in a time of 3:17:01 but deserves huge credit for stopping to help a fellow a runner who had fallen and suffered a head injury.

Pete Smith finished in 1:39:58; Brian White crossed the line in 1:40:42 and Jim Brown was the sixth quickest in his age group, going round in 1:50:11.

Jennifer Naisbitt (2:12:56), Gerry Rosen (2:20:22), Karen Broom (2:20:38) and Emma Rushworth (2:36:35) rounded off the Spartan runners.

Elsewhere, eight Spartan runners took part in the Cambridge half marathon, with Simon Jackson the fastest male finisher in a time of 1:17:26 and Ashley Schoenwetter the quickest female in 1:31:13.

Steffan Ford recorded a personal best time of 1:18:07, as did Suzy Hawkins who finished in 1:32:46.

Daniel Sutton finished in 1:50:45, closely followed by Verity Fisher (1:51:49), Marie Colucci (1:55:30) and Dawn Easby (1:55:30).

The snowy conditions saw the Welwyn Half Marathon cancelled while a number of park runs also fell foul of the weather, meaning only two Spartan runners competed at the weekend.

John Roxborough and Mark Beasley both raced at Panshanger, finishing just five seconds apart with times of 23:11 and 23:16.

Spartan David Bowker represented the Easter Masters Athletic Club in the Inter Area Indoor Match at Lee Valley, finishing fourth in the male 35 plus 2K walk and running the third leg of the male 50 plus relay team who finished third.

Spartans Callie Chapman, Kym Martin and Hazel Smith are running the London Marathon for Children with Cancer in the UK on Sunday, 22 April.
