Canaries fall to single goal defeat at Leamington
Leamington 1 Hitchin Town 0
Evo-Stik Southern Premier
When Hitchin fans heard that David Kolodynski had signed for Leamington, they feared the worst.
The diminutive talent had been the scourge of the Canaries in previous seasons, and for the third time he proved to be the matchwinner at the Great Windmill Ground.
Kolodynski’s goal, on a day when the breeze was strong enough to turn any windmill, was one of the few highlights in a game that barely got going.
There was little between the two sides, despite the absence of the Canaries’ nine-goal striker, John Frendo.
Hitchin started as if they were determined not to miss Frendo and a seventh minute cross by Ieuan Lewis to the far post was met by Jerome Anderson’s head, but his effort was easily saved by Leamington goalkeeper Tony Breeden.
Anderson was in the action again after 16 minutes when his ball across goal just failed to find a Hitchin recipient.
Leamington gradually came alive and in the 27th minute Jacob Blyth saw his header over Martin Bennett cleared off the line by Tom Pepper. Then a Pepper clearance cannoned off Dean Gilbert and almost found the Hitchin net.
Bennett came to Hitchin’s rescue just before the interval when he saved from Michael Tuohy, and almost on the whistle Kolodynski attempted a chip that just sailed over Bennett.
Leamington should have gone ahead in the 51st minute when James Husband blasted over with the goal at his mercy.
Hitchin’s attack, compared to recent games, was blunt, although Zak Burke went close when he shot into the side-netting.
Leamington’s long ball game was stymied by the wind and for much of the second period the Canaries were comfortable.
With 12 minutes remaining, Blyth was denied by a goalline clearance – this time by Gilbert - but from the resulting corner Kolodynski headed into the far corner.
There was scarcely anything else to interest the fans and Hitchin were left to reflect on the early chances they created.
