James Ball’s free kick was excellent, what did you make of his performance?

James Ball is a fantastic player. I brought him to the football club because I know his qualities, he’s not fit yet, he’s not at the level where he wants to be, he missed a lot of pre-season – but he’s getting fitter and fitter.

He’s he’s a goal scoring midfielder and he’s got two now in three games.

I counted four really good saves today from debutant keeper Seny Dieng...

Yes, later on we had to rely on him, we got tired legs and a few one on ones I thought he was fantastic.

You’ve got every right to be proud of your side but I’ve got to say that first goal that wasn’t what you expect to see from this Stevenage side?

The first goal, Scott Cuthbert was having treatment to his hand. There was confusion with the referee – about whether he wanted him to come on.

The fourth official stopped him from coming on.

He was coming on when they scored the goal. I can’t have my best aerial defender off the pitch in a corner when we’re very organised normally.

I take your point, but shouldn’t other players step up and organise?

Yes of course, we switched off. They played the short corner and we didn’t follow his man. We knew they would be very good from set plays and that’s one of the points I said to the players after the game.

Two things came from the tonight: I want better set plays and our ball retention should be better.

We’ve got to keep improving all the time and keep it simple for the players.

I said we have to keep the ball better we can’t keep giving the ball away cheaply.

From set plays, we conceded two from set plays.

So as much as Norwich have had the [majority] possession, they scored two goals from set plays. The last one was very late on – we put numbers forward and only defended with two players.

You can take a lot of positives from tonight...

Of course, the first thing is the players went out there with a real belief to win the game and stuck to the game plan and they worked their socks off. The players they put a shift in for the club.
