The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes star from Hertfordshire qualified fourth in Brazil today (Saturday) and will line-up alongside team-mate Jenson Button.

World F1 champion Sebastian Vettel set a blistering lap of 1m 11.918s to take pole position for Red Bull – a record 15th of the season.

He will start on the front row ahead of colleague Mark Webber, who was 0.181s slower.

Button and Hamilton will form an all McLaren second row on the grid at Interlagos tomorrow (Sunday).

“The Red Bulls were massively quick today,” admitted Hamilton.

Of his own performance, he said: “It’s a little bit disappointing. We’re still on the second row but I would have liked to have been stronger.”

Fernando Alonso will start fifth for Ferrari in Sao Paulo ahead of Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg.

Completing the top 10 are Felipe Massa in seventh, Adrian Sutil, Brazilian Bruno Senna – the nephew of the legendary Ayrton Senna – and Michael Schumacher, who starts 10th.

Herts-born Hamilton, 26, was only fifth fastest after the first runs in Q3 with a 1m 12.906s.

However, that was massively slower that Vettel, who slammed down a super-fast 1m 12.268s to take provisional pole ahead of Webber with a 1m 12.518s.

Vettel went even quicker with his final hot lap.

Button was third at that stage with a lap time of 1m 12.613s.

With the threat of rain on the horizon, Vettel was also fastest in Q2 with a 1m 12.446s ahead of Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes.

Webber was third with Hamilton fourth to comfortably progress through to the top 10 shootout.

At the end of Q2, Hamilton and Button were P4 and P5 with times of 1m 12.811s and 1m 12.820s respectively.

Button had earlier topped the timesheets in Q1 with a 1m 13.281s ahead of Hamilton in second placed with a 1m 13.361s.

The 2011 Grand Prix of Brazil – the final race of the season – starts at 4pm on Sunday.
