Letchworth move into semi-finals of Anagrams Record Trophy
Letchworth Garden City Eagles 3 Met Police Bushey 2
Anagram Records Trophy: Quarter-final
Eagles moved into the semi-finals of the Anagram Records Trophy after a superb first half performance brushed aside high-flying Met Police Bushey.
The game started at a high pace with Eagles pressurising Bushey’s backline into several errors, and after 10 minutes their hard work paid off when Ben L’Honore charged down the keeper’s clearance to deflect in the opener.
The hosts didn’t have to wait long for the second with L’Honore this time the architect, floating in a free kick to the back post where Joe De La Salle controlled on his chest and volleyed home.
Debutant striker Lee Harman, signed this week from Stotfold, had a half-chance when he latched onto a long goal kick but he couldn’t make significant connection with the bouncing ball, and then Lee Pateman shot over from close range after De La Salle’s pull back from the right hand side.
Eagles extended their lead further on 30 minutes when the referee spotted a tug on Harman in the box after another L’Honore dead ball. De La Salle stepped up to score his eighth goal in five games.
Bushey, who had created a couple of half chances, got a goal back when an in-swinging free kick from the right was glanced in by Shorto to make it 3-1 on the stroke of half time.
Eagles defended their lead resolutely in the second half but had a touch of luck on their side too. Bushey hit the bar from long range, and Michael Johnson tipped a stinging effort over.
With 20 minutes remaining, Eagles’ Joe Tyler was sent off after an altercation with a couple of Bushey players, but the man disadvantage spurred the home side on.
Several last ditch tackles prevented clear cut chances as Bushey piled on the pressure and Eagles ended the game with a six man defence.
Their guard was eventually breached when Darby controlled in the box and slid under Johnson deep into stoppage time, but there was barely time to kick off.
Eagles will now face MK Wanderers in the semi-final, as they bid to defend their trophy.
Eagles: Johnson; McGennity, Garwood (Davies), Locke, Till, Pennery, Tyler, L’Honore (Cox), Pateman, Harman (Large), De La Salle.
