Hitchin Nomads took part in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in France at the weekend.

A select group travelled to Albi in the Midi-Pyrenees region of southern France after securing qualification with strong performances at the Tour of Cambridgeshire in June.

Two teams of four Nomads contested the road relay event, with each completing one lap of a testing 6k circuit in the town.

The A team of captain John Watson, Ingrid Matthews, Nick Morgan and James McPherson finished 13th, while Chris Batt, Dave Rickells, Manuel Manrique Martinez and Joanne Stephens brought the B team home in 21st place.

The main event involved mass start road races for men and women over 97k or 155k, with some categories having over 300 riders.

John Watson (14th) and Ingrid Matthews (28th) were best placed Nomads, cheered on by injured duo John Martin and Catherine Jones.
