Letchworth among the winners in the Mixed League
Letchworth Garden City beat Knebworth in the Stevenage and District Mixed League at Knebworth on Saturday by 80 points to 60.
Dave Haggar’s four won by 37 shots to 11 and Bob Rogan skipped his four to a 17-12 win. Colin Jellis’s team lost 18-16 on the last end and Ken Starkey’s four lost by 19 shots to 11.
In a friendly match on Sunday at Royston the hosts triumphed in the heat by 79 shots to 58, winning on three rinks.
Starkey’s rink won on the last end by a single point, 16-15. Other rinks lost: Bob Rogan 21-20; Roger Williams 26-8; and Dan Bett 17-14.
Baldock beat Buntingford in the National 2 Fours. Mike Parson’s rink were held at 7-7 and Brian Todd’s rink were trailing 18-1, however, recoveries on both rinks led to Parsons winning by 25-9 while Todd’s rink fought back to lose by just six shots.
Baldock played Ware in a five rink match and won 102-74.
Saturday’s match against Hitchin was a close affair. Both sides won on two rinks but Baldock prevailed by 87-82.
Baldock’s top rink was Devon Cooper, Doug Nicholls, Terry Saunders and Mike Wintrip.
Riverain played Datchworth in the Knockout Cup, winning 78-67, with the two away triples losing 37-29 and the two home triples winning 49-30.
The ladies beat Knebworth in a league match 36-21. Two friendlies were played but Riverain lost them both. They fell to a 69-62 defeat against Stopsley and a 73-54 loss against Hertford.
The club held its fixed jack singles competition for the Jess Parsons Trophy, won by Betty Lee.
Norton Bowls Club obviously did not like the heat last week as they lost to both St Ippolyts and Howard Garden.
Holwell played a friendly against Potton but lost 111-77, though on Sunday they took on, and beat, Luton West End 61-51.
Also on Sunday, the men beat Potton 78-43 in the National 2 Fours. The East Beds League saw Holwell B lose to Stotfold by seven shots but beat Henlow C in the Knockout Cup.
Holwell A beat Biggleswade by one shot while the club’s ladies are through to the next round of the County Triples and Fours.
Howard Garden had a busy weekend. On Friday evening they lost on all rinks in the Knockout Cup to Three Horseshoes but got their own back on Saturday winning 82-69 in the league. On Sunday they won at Norton, in a friendly, 87-69.
Datchworth Blue 25 Much Hadham Eagles 32 (top rink: D Henley, S Arnold and L Parsley won 20-8); Datchworth Gold 32 Bishop’s Stortford Swifts 49 (top rink: J Whittle, N Poulton and J Adams won 19-17); Datchworth Green 42 WGC Knights 26 (top rink: C Hills, J Russell and J James won 27-11); Datchworth Yellow 43 Knebworth A 25 (top rink: D Kingsland, D Henley and J Adamswon 26-9); Datchworth 66 Aston 81 (all four rinks lost); Datchworth 120 Potters Bar 126 (top rink: B Tapper, B Burbridge, M Mahoney and P Hills won 32-9); Datchworth 81 Harperbury 93 (all four rinks lost).
Hitchin Town lost at Baldock, 87-82. With both teams winning two rinks, Baldock just edged ahead in the last couple of ends. Hitchin’s top rink was Barbara Darke, Gerry Billingham, Mike Wadsworth and Andy Hill.
Shefford Bowls Club’s ladies A beat Ampthill in Division One.
The club’s men’s B team went out of the Knockout Cup, losing to Sandy Conservative A 40-21.
Last Friday the men’s A team beat Flitwick while the C team went out of the Knockout Cup losing at home to Ampthill A.
On Saturday the ladies went out of the National Top Club when they lost 3-1 to Biggleswade, the only winner being Maureen Nicholson who won a singles game 21-20.
The ladies, some of whom had played against Biggleswade, had a good 64–43 win at Flitwick hours later.
The men hosted Fairfield and won 90-50.
On Sunday Shefford travelled to Ashcroft for a four rink triples game and came away losing by 76 shots to 66.
In the East Beds Triples League there were wins for all four of Stotfold Bowls Club’s teams. The A team won at Ampthill B, the B team won at Maulden B, the C team beat both Holwell A and Biggleswade B and the D team won matches against Great Barford B and Potton D.
In the Knockout Cup Stotfold C lost in the second round to Maulden A. The A team won at Fairfield B and the D team lost to Great Barford A.
In the County League, Stotfold beat Sandy Con 81-70. Stotfold also beat Biggleswade Town last Saturday 106-65.
In the National Two Fours against Luton Kent Athletic, Stotfold lost 32-38 in the first round.
Stotfold ladies A played the club’s B team in the East Beds League and won by one shot.
In the Beds County Triples, a Stotfold ladies triple lost out to Biggleswade in the second round. Another Stotfold triple lost to Biggleswade, again, in the first round.
In the Saturday friendly, Stotfold ladies lost 57-47 to Bedford Priory Ladies.
Stotfold is holding a Target Bowls event in conjunction with the Queens Jubilee Picnic in the Park being held on the Recreation Ground on June 3 between 12pm and 5.15pm.
