RED Nose Day events kicked off in Comet country a day early when champion ice skater Fiona Warner took her class at the Hitchin Language Centre dressed in her skating gear.

At the end of the afternoon she had racked in £100 from her students.

Today (Friday), dozens of events were being held in shops and industrial companies to a golf club and fitness centres and schools.

At Adept Scientific in Letchworth GC, Member of the European Parliament Richard Howitt got into the swing of things throwing a wellington boot to raise money.

There was also a bring-and-buy sale of cakes and other goodies that were brought in by staff who also had a competition to try and find the best moustache.

Pensioner Austen Woodgate, 80, had a close shave when he decided to get rid of his whiskers after having a beard for 32 years.

Mr Woodgate, a resident at Peter Sell House in Hitchin, was clean shaven by John Arnold, the scheme manager for North Herts Homes watched by his daughters Sue Woodgate and Wendy Guinan.
