A Tesco Express is set to open in Middlefields, Letchworth GC, in the middle of October after The Pelican pub was sold to the supermarket by owners Greene King in February.

The takeover, which went ahead after Greene King bought the freehold of the land from North Herts District Council for £100,000, has been criticising by businesses at neighbouring shopping precinct The Parade because of the impact it could have on trade.

The new store is expected to create around 20 jobs, with applications opening in September.
