Graffiti sprayed on the plinth of Sappho at Howard Park and Gardens

VANDALS have struck at a newly refurbished park for a second time, less than two months after it was reopened to the public.

Offensive and racist graffiti was sprayed in Howard Park and Gardens in Letchworth GC on Friday, following a £2.7m renovation which was completed in March.

Pathways, the plinth of the statue Sappho, the amphitheatre and shutters to the newly installed kiosk were all vandalised. The incident follows damage to tiles on the roof of the new kiosk and public toilet building, as well numerous acts of graffiti which occurred two weeks after the park reopened.

North Herts District Council (NHDC) is working closely with police looking at CCTV images taken from the park both to try and identify the perpetrators and to prevent further acts of anti-social behaviour.

“We are extremely sad that another mindless act of vandalism has been carried out in a place where families and children go to relax and play,” said Cllr Ian Knighton, NHDC’s portfolio holder for leisure.

“A lot of time and money has been invested in the renovation of Howard Park and Gardens so that it can be enjoyed by the whole community. Unfortunately, it is being spoilt by a thoughtless minority.”

Letchworth safer neighbourhood sergeant Simon Turner added: “This mindless vandalism is a criminal offence and we are investigating it robustly and increasing patrols in the area.
