A drink-driver from Stevenage who was involved in a crash while more than four times the alcohol limit has been given a suspended sentence.

David Alabaster, 54, had 154 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath while at the wheel on November 6. The limit is 35.

Magistrates at Hatfield Remand Court sentenced him to 18 weeks behind bars, suspended for 12 months, after he admitted drink-driving on Monday.

Chairman of the bench Maria Butchart also imposed a 48-month driving ban – noting that the offence was particularly serious as a crash had happened.

Alabaster, of Burleigh Road in Stevenage, was found to be almost four times the alcohol limit while driving a Volkswagen Polo in the town’s Hertford Road.

In addition to drink-driving, he admitted failing to surrender to custody at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on December 6 after being released on bail a month earlier.

The court has imposed a six-month electronically-monitored curfew on Alabaster, meaning he must remain at his home address between 11pm and 11am daily until June 10 next year. He must also pay £85 costs and £115 surcharge.
