David Carter, 50, was a history teacher at The Barclay School in Stevenage. He is understood to have had a problem with his renal health.

Headteacher, Debbie Upton said, “David Carter was an extremely popular teacher and colleague and was held in great affection by staff and students alike.

“His dedication and tremendous sense of community spirit made him a significant presence in school and he will be hugely missed by the whole of the Barclay School Community past and present.”

Mr Carter had worked at Barclay for the last 13 years and had served as both a Head of House and a Head of Year.

Former student Terri Dendy, 25, said: “‘Mr Carter made the history department at Barclay school an engaging environment for all students - regardless of how well they behaved. Thanks to his ability to teach the dull curriculum with a bit of banter I passed my history GCSE and A level. Without his support I wouldn’t have gone on to study history at University and focus my career on the subject. Every student looked forward to his lessons because he made each one feel special. He was a truly unique, caring man and wonderful teacher who touched a generation of Barclay students. My heart goes out to his family and friends at this hard time.”

He lived locally with his wife and three children who all attended Barclay School. Many of his former students have taken to the internet to pay tribute to him.

One wrote: “R.I.P Mr. Carter, the absolute heart and soul of Barclay school - thoughts go out to the family!”

Another said: “Can’t believe the sad news about Mr Carter, a legend who had a positive impact on all that went to Barclay. Thoughts with the family.”

One other wrote: “Sad news Mr Carter from Barclay School has passed away. One of the few teachers gifted enough to get kids enjoying learning. RIP.”
