A 26-year-old man has admitted stealing £3,500 from an employer in Hitchin.

Liam Cowan, of Grampian Place in Stevenage, stole the cash from Hitchin-based hardware retailers Brookers over the course of three weeks in October last year.

He pleaded guilty to theft by an employee when he appeared before Stevenage magistrates on Wednesday last week.

Chairman of the bench George Baxter fined Cowan £583, and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £58 surcharge – a total bill of £726 – at a rate of £50 per week. His guilty plea was taken into account.
