A spate of attempted break-ins and thefts from vehicles in a particular area of Stevenage has prompted officers to urge motorists to be vigilant.

Police described the following four crimes, all in and around the Symonds Green area:

• Between 4.30pm on June 20 and 1pm on June 21, a car parked in Kilby Road was damaged and somebody searched inside, stealing coins (crime reference 41/11909/18)

• Between 10am on June 25 and 2pm on June 30, someone damaged a car parked in Fairview Road. Nothing was taken (crime reference 41/12684/18)

• Between 8pm on June 27 and 8.20am on June 28, someone got into a car in Fairview Road and stole sunglasses from inside (crime reference 41/12131/18)

• Between 5.45pm and 9.30pm on June 29, someone tried to force open a car door in Prestatyn Close, damaging the bodywork. No entry was gained (crime reference 41/12478/18).

In a Stevenage Neighbourhood Watch message, PCSO Greg Neath said: “Thieves have been targeting and breaking into vehicles at night for valuables, such as mobile phones, satnavs and loose change.

“Hertfordshire Constabulary are working hard to catch those responsible, and would like to remind all residents of the importance of locking your vehicles at night, and ensuring that no valuable items are left on show or unattended.”
