Hitchin’s RSPCA shop has had its best sales yet during its donate-what-you-like event.

The second-hand book, DVD and CD sale at the RSPCA Hertfordshire East Branch shop in Churchyard saw shoppers allowed to take as much as they liked in return for a donation of their choice.

These sales have become a regular monthly feature at the shop since April, and this time the generous people of Hitchin and the surrounding area donated almost £170 during the four hours – more than any previous sale.

Branch trustee and event organiser Heather Nicholls said: “We used to sell our books in Hitchin market but we now open our nearby shop one Sunday each month solely for the sale of our books, DVDs and CDs.

“Donations have increased month on month as the word has spread. We attribute the event’s success to the wide choice of books available and leaving it to the discretion of the buyer how much to donate – people appreciate that.

“It’s a lot of hard work for our dedicated team of volunteers, but it’s so rewarding. Instead of just asking people to give money to support our charity, we’re also giving something very useful in return.

“I’d like to thank all those that help make our book sales a success, including the local shopkeepers who kindly display our posters advertising them – and, of course, the public that support us.”

Further events for the rest of this year are scheduled for October 29, November 26 and December 10 and 17. The additional sale in December is to give an extra opportunity to get in the stocking fillers for Christmas.

RSPCA Herts East Branch is an independent charity registered separately from the national RSPCA, and relies on donations collected locally to fund its operations.
