A long-serving district councillor from Royston has sadly died aged 68.

Peter Burt was first elected to North Herts District Council to represent Royston Heath ward in 1998 – a role he fulfilled up until his death on Wednesday last week.

He became vice chairman of the council in 2000 and took over the 12-month post as council chairman the following year.

He was the council’s executive member for waste management, recycling and environment and a member of many committees, including the Royston area committee, scrutiny committee and the chairman of licencing and appeals.

He also worked as the district council’s representative with organisations like Groundwork Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, the Royston branch of Herts Action on Disability, Relate, Royston and District Sports Council, Royston’s Citizens Advice Panel, and the

Knebworth House Education & Preservation Trust.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary, sons Andrew and Graham, and grandson Alexander.

Following a private cremation, a thanksgiving service will take place in memory of Mr Burt at Royston’s St John the Baptist Church at 2pm on Wednesday, March 29.
