Lifeline Stevenage bus service saved

An axed bus service that was a lifeline to a town centre has been saved - in the short term.
Centrebus will reinstate the Saturday SB10 service from the Old Town to Bedwell in Stevenage on May 5 after scrapping the route at the beginning of April due to its unprofitability.
The operator will be able to run the service again after Herts County Council agreed to a proposal by Stevenage Borough Council leader Sharon Taylor to fund it from her locality budget. The £4,650 funding from her £10,000 budget will keep the service running for a year.
Cllr Taylor said she was surprised the council agreed to the suggestion. County Hall had earlier rejected an appeal by Centrebus for the funding.
She added: “It gives us a bit of breathing space to look at funding of this service in the longer term. It’s essential for people with mobility issues. It’s really, really important to the people who use it.”
