A guard remains in place at the scene following the incident in Icknield Way, which happened on Saturday shortly before 4pm – with police called by paramedics at about 10pm that night.

The victim is described by police as aged in her 50s, and remains in hospital as of 12 noon today.

Two men and a woman, all from Letchworth, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday.

A 39-year-old man and 41-year-old woman have been released under investigation. A 57-year-old man has been released with no further action.

A police spokeswoman said: “It has been established that all parties involved are known to each other. A scene guard remains at the address while enquiries continue.

“At this early stage of the investigation, officers are keeping an open mind as to how the woman sustained her injuries and whether there was any third-party involvement.”
