Prolific knitters Hitchin Stitchin are to give a unique flavour of the jungle during a free community garden open day this weekend.
The Triangle Community Garden’s annual open day is on Sunday at Ransom’s Recreation Ground – and will feature a dog show, a bake-off and more.
Hitchin Stitchin are all geared up to ‘yarnbomb’ the garden with their colourful knitted creations.
“We’re really looking forward to seeing the garden adorned with wool,” said garden open day organiser Vicky Wyer.
“It will be a lovely addition to our open day and hopefully encourage more people to visit the garden on June 10.
“Visitors will be able to admire their efforts at their leisure or on a tour of the Triangle Garden, as well as enjoying a host of open-day fun activities for all ages.
“This year I am delighted that we will be showcasing performances by carnival drummers Garden City Samba and Hitchin Allstar Choir – plus a chance to get fit with Zumba with Robert!”
The dog show at the open day will be sponsored by Berry House Vets, and in aid of rescue charity Forever Hounds Trust.
There will also be pond-dipping, welly-wanging, kids’ activities, food stalls and much more.
“We are always open to offers of help with this event,” said Vicky. “Donations of plants and homemade cakes beforehand are very welcome, plus offers of help on the day. Please contact Brigid Bassindale if you’d like to volunteer in any way.”
You can get hold of Brigid by email on firstname.lastname@example.org.
The bake-off competition will be open to all ages, with judging from Emma Ince Goulding of CookeryEatery.
“I’m so happy to have been asked to help judge at the Open Day again this year,” said Emma.
“I’m especially looking forward to meeting all the young cooks and bakers, and hearing about their special bakes.”
Places for the bake-off are limited – enter online at trianglegarden.org/events.
The free day is open to all and will support the community garden and its projects, including Growing Ability and Growing Health – healthy living projects for people living with learning disabilities.
The fun starts at 12 noon and goes on until 4.15pm.
