A 42-year-old man from Hitchin has been charged with being drunk and disorderly after a fight in Letchworth at the weekend that left him and another man in hospital.
Officers were called to Southfields in the garden city on Sunday after reports that two men were fighting near the Tesco Express store, which resulted in a shop window being smashed at the nearby Macron shop.
Following the incident – which took place between 3pm and 3.15pm – a man was taken to hospital for treatment for a facial injury.
Craig Batten, 42, of Radcliffe Road in Hitchin, has now been charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place in connection with the incident, and is set to appear before Stevenage magistrates on October 11.
Another man, who is 33 and from Letchworth, was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a bladed weapon.
He remains in hospital receiving treatment for the injuries he sustained. A police spokeswoman said today that officers would be making contact with him in due course.
Herts police launched a public appeal on Monday for witnesses to come forward.
Det Con Geoff Scarborough, from the North Herts local crime unit, said: “Due to the nature and location of the incident, we believe it would have caused a disturbance to local residents who may have seen or heard what happened.
“Therefore we are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time who may be able to help us with our enquiries to please come forward and speak to us if they have not done so already. You can contact us on the non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 445 of September 10, or report information online at contacthertspolice.uk/Report/Crime.”
