Patrick Marshall, who was appointed as head of Marriotts School in January 2002, stepped down with immediate effect this morning due to “personal reasons”.

The school in Telford Avenue was visited by Ofsted on February 8 and 9 but the inspection’s findings have not yet been published.

Andy Peary, chair of governors at the school, told The Comet: “I can confirm he has resigned from Marriotts School and it is for personal reasons.

“In the interim period Ian Dougall, the associate headteacher, will be the acting headteacher. The local authority are assisting the school with finding a replacement.”

The secondary school is currently undergoing a £43m redevelopment scheme which will house pupils at the current site as well as those at nearby Lonsdale School for children with physical and neurological disabilities. The superstructure of the new school buildings at Marriotts was completed last month and celebrated with a topping out ceremony.

In a letter addressed to students, parents and carers, Mr Peary added: “I wish to take this opportunity of thanking him for his commitment and dedication to the school and its community during the 10 years he has been headteacher.

“We have made excellent strides, and the new school from which we will all benefit, is a testament to his imagination, vision and energy. I believe we have all benefitted from his time at Marriotts.

“We will continue to build on his legacy to ensure the school becomes more effective in providing for our children now and in the future.”

Regarding the Ofsted report, a spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We are awaiting Ofsted’s findings, which are expected four to six weeks after the inspection. Neither Hertfordshire County Council nor the school can comment further until then.”

  • At school today I heard that when they had an Ofsted Inspection they locked a Inspector in the Cupboard. But he was a great headteacher.

  • Patrick Marshall has been a true inspiration to so many of us and over the years he has done so much for both Marriotts and its students. He not only had his own visions, but he was able to see the visions of both students and staff and do everything in his power to make these visions become reality. It is a huge shame that he will not be there to take the students into the new school after he dedicated so much time and passion into it. Patrick Marshall was a very caring and devoted Head who will be sorely missed by so many of us.

  • Very sad to hear the news, Mr Marshall was an inspirational head whose dedicated to Marriotts has been evident over the last 10 years. It is a great shame he won't get to be the head at the new school, a project he was extremely enthusiastic about. • I also would like to say Thank You for all your help and support, not many other headteachers would come in on saturdays to help the students with their maths, you were so dedicated to your work. I am deverstated that you wont be able to work in the new school which you have put so much into. There will NEVER be another headteacher that could ever replace you, you were a true inspiration to us all and you will be miss by passed and present students. I wish you great success in everything you do and once again Thank You!!

  • He was a true inspiration to everyone at the school; I certainly looked up to him in his leading role and his vision to take Marriotts into the 21st century with a brand new school. It is sad to see him leave, after all he turned the school around and made it into something that achieve's. Thank you Mr Marshall for all your hard work!

  • This has got to be the worst timing for someone to resign, considering he's about to open the new school and he was so dedicated to this project. Mr Marshall has to be one of the best headteachers in the world he did a lot for Marriotts, grades improved tremendously and he put it back on top so this is very sad.... We will miss You Mr Marshall.
