A couple who have been married for 65 years have said that the secret to their long marriage has been to give and take.
Cyril and Jean Andrews celebrated their wedding anniversary yesterday (Wednesday).
The couple, who live in St Ippolyts, marked the milestone event with a family meal.
Jean, 83, met her husband at a dance in Hitchin and married him at the age of 18 at St Ippolyts Church.
Speaking about his life with his wife, 92-year-old Cyril, who was in the army before he met his wife, said: “We have been very lucky and are very happy. Despite a few ailments and some minor aches and pains, we still go and do the shopping together and do the garden together. We have always looked after one another.”
The couple, who have one son, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, have lived in St Ippolyts most of their lives.
Cyril was born and bred in the village, while Jean, who is from Hitchin and worked in the Hitchin Laundry as a teenager, moved to St Ippolyts after they married.
Jean spent 63 years looking after St Ippolyts Church and cleaning it with her mother-in-law.
She said: “We love living in the village and we have had a marvellous marriage that has been very happy. The secret to our marriage is about giving and taking.”
