The completion of major roadworks between Stevenage and Ware has been delayed for a month.

The improvement works on the A602 at the Hertford Road junction in Stevenage, the Anchor Lane roundabout, Westmill Road and the A10 roundabout on the edge of Ware are now due to be completed by April 30 – a month later than the completion date of the end of March originally given.

Herts County Council, whose Highways department manages the work, says the work is progressing well but has been delayed by “adverse ground conditions and engineering challenges” at Hertford Road.

The county council has said it is aware of the delays for users of the A602, who are currently having to use diversion routes and put up with road closures and traffic management.

It said its contractor has tried to minimise disruption by adding additional workers and doing more work at night. It added that while work is underway it has taken the opportunity to carry out some necessary maintenance works to trees and road drainage in Westmill Road, and co-ordinated with the local water company for them to carry out improvements to their water main near the Anchor Lane roundabout.

The council said this joined-up approach will reduce the need for future roadworks and disruption.

Ralph Sangster, the council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “We understand the frustration that motorists feel when delayed by road works and it’s obviously disappointing that the project has encountered some setbacks that will delay completion.

“However, the end result will be much-needed improvements to this very busy road. This scheme, along with further planned improvements at the A119 roundabout and along Ware Road, are part of the council’s commitment to improved highway infrastructure in the county.”
