A Biggleswade woman wants to warn other motorists after what she believes to be a rock smashed her windscreen while driving on the A1(M) last night.

The woman and her husband were travelling northbound at around 10pm when something was dropped from a bridge on to the car around a mile away from junction 10, near the Baldock services.

The object – believed to be a rock – caused her windscreen to partially smash, spraying glass in her face.

The driver, who did not want to be identified, told the Comet: “It was very dark because there are very few street lights, I was travelling about 70mph when there was a huge smashing sound and I felt the glass spraying in my face so I pulled over in front of a lorry that had already pulled over.

“My husband got out and walked towards the bridge to see if anyone was still there and spoke to the lorry driver who said something was thrown at him as he passed under the bridge as well.

“Luckily the windscreen was intact enough to drive home. We were just very lucky that it wasn’t too busy on the road and we didn’t swerve or hit anyone else and cause a bigger accident.

“Thank god there wasn’t any real damage – the next car may not be so lucky though.”

A spokeswoman for Herts police said: “Officers arrived at the scene and carried out a search of the bridges in the area. One man was stopped but everything was in order. Enquiries are continuing.”

Anyone with information should call Herts police – who are dealing with the incident as it falls just inside their border with Bedfordshire – on 101.
