Edwina Ward, who has worked as a bridal seamstress for 15 years, began the task as soon as Kate’s dress was revealed when she stepped out of the car before her wedding to Prince William on Friday. May 29.

It was finished at 1am on Sunday morning.

“I started the dress on Friday. I was sketching as Kate came out of the car at the Abbey,” said Edwina, who lives in Weston Way, Baldock.

“While I was sketching and doing the pattern, I had someone in Oxford Street waiting for my call to source the fabric.

“The bodice was on the mannequin by 5.30pm. It was exciting because there was this sense of urgency that it had to be done.

“I didn’t have time to think about what I was doing. I was working pretty much flat out.”

Edwina, who runs her own business but does some work for Expressions Bridalwear in Hitchin, created the copy of Sarah Burton’s creation solely by herself.

The dress is made up of a strapless bodice, lace cape and long train.

“I had great fun working on it, because Kate’s dress was such a lovely design,” said Edwina.

“I thought it was beautiful and just right for the occasion.

“She had to be very careful what she chose, especially after all the bad publicity that Diana had with her dress. But it was very classical and very feminine.”

Edwina’s feat was part of a national competition run by the Daily Mirror, which sought a bride-to-be to win the dress. Elizabeth Bentley, 25, from Cwmbran, Gwent was selected the winner and has now been handed over the dress.
