Hundreds of people turned out for a true show of community yesterday at the Baldock Big Lunch, with great food ranging from fish and chips to curry.
The big lunch, the first event run by the new Baldock Events Forum, has been widely acknowledged as a big success – with forum manager Richard Sell and his team receiving scores of congratulatory messages afterwards.
The food on offer included barbecue fare from Chapman’s Butchers, fish and chips from Terry Cox, roast dinners from the White Lion, curry from the Chilli Lounge and ploughman’s lunches and feta salads from the Taste café.
And with music from Balstock supremo G LaRoche and his family, a good time was had by all.
Richard said: “It all went down very well. We had more than 300 people there, and the feedback has been really good.
“The weather was kind to us, of course, and the covers we put up were great for such a hot day.
“We had games donated by Satchells, which were great, and tables and chairs from Knights Templar School, Baldock Community Centre and St Mary’s Church – and a van lent to us by Staffy B home goods, which we couldn’t have done without.
“We had a dozen or so volunteers who were there from 7am setting up to 8pm taking it all down, and Knights Templar Sports Centre were brilliant on the day as well. They were organising events with the Scouts, who raised something like £500 on the day.
“All in all, the whole thing just highlights the great community spirit we have in Baldock.”
The Big Lunch is a national initiative that has been run by the Eden Project since 2009, encouraging people to have a meal with their neighbours.
