Heathcote Secondary School in Stevenage will shut in August in a shake-up of education in the town by Herts County Council, and a reunion is being held to gather as many of its alumni and staff together as possible.

Organiser Cara Matthews said: “To mark this sad event former students and staff and being invited to come along to one of three social events which are being organised at the school. These will be an opportunity to catch up with old school friends and teachers, reminisce over old photographs and bid for selected memorabilia.”

Pupils who left in 2009 or before are invited to an evening reunion on July 6, while those who left in 2010 and 2011 are invited for an afternoon event on June 28.

Former staff should contact the school for details of a staff reunion.

The organisers are calling for any photos or memorabilia from pupils and staff for a display.

Tickets for the pre-2009 reunion are £15 available from the school on 01438 222100 or t.clark@heathcote.herts.sch.uk. All profits will go Garden House Hospice in Letchworth.

  • II started Heathcote School in 1955 as there was not a primary school built at the time… I lived at 90, Leaves Spring and the school was walking distance through the back entrance. I remember the class room had a piano in it and all the furniture was large and very intimidating for a small child… later I went to Peartree Junior School and then back to Heathcote when I failed my ‘Eleven Plus’… I was not a good reader and came 26th in my class that first year, bottom and was given extra reading help. I remember the long narrow closet I was taught in, but it helped and the following year I came Ist in my class and was given a book ”Little Women” at assembly. I was chosen as a ‘Prefect’ much to my surprise, as I wasn’t popular (1966’ish)….. My favourite subject was math (taught by Mr. Kay) and I am now an AutoCAD Drafter in a Civil Engineering Company in Northern California. I remember the stairs to the third floor and as I have a problem with height standing on them made me very nervous…. I remember having a Christmas Cake I made displayed in the case in the hall outside the Head Master’s Office, I had cut-out a reindeer out of marzipan on the top. I also won an award for a picture I had embroidered using the inside of an apple as a design, it was all done in purple fabric, net, and beads, wish I still had it!!!!! I made a lined jacket in sewing, the pattern was ‘Vouge’ and all in French but as I have a very “artistic” eye I was able to understand it. I remember our cooking teacher, we had to make our aprons in sewing first, I loved “Domestic Science” and I can see the teacher in my mind’s eye, but cannot remember her name… I remember taking the things we made home and my Dad was thrilled. I have some fond memories of Heathcote, I am sorry it is closing and I wish I could be at a reunion but as I live so far away I doubt if that will happen. I am turning 62 years old next week, my family was one of the first families to move to Stevenage when I was 5 years old, my Dad worked at British Aircraft Corporation and both my sisters attended Heathcote, my name was Christine Banham, my sister two years behind me was Alison Banham and my other sister eight years behind me was Rhoda Banham.
