Children from 16 different schools took part with parents, grandparents, staff and guardians attending.
Stevenage's Deputy Mayoress, Cllr Myla Arceno, and her consort also attended the event.
‘The Writing Project’ was created by Sarah Inman, acting headteacher of Pixmore Junior School in Letchworth.
Sarah said: "The project was created as a way of engaging children in creative writing by exploring characters, events and themes using drama, art, technology etc.
"The focus is always a beautiful, quality text; this year, we chose ‘The Midnight Fair’ by American author, Gideon Sterer, who sent a special video message to the children at the awards.
"The project has had such an impact on the way the schools involved teach writing and I am so proud that the project this year reached over 5,500 children."

Jason Valentine, manager of Broadway Cinema & Theatre said: "We were really proud to have been asked to host this event – our venue is so much more than your average cinema; we’re there for the community and this kind of event is a great example of that. Well done to all the brilliant young people – it was a pleasure to meet you all!"
