RESIDENTS living close to a recycling centre in Haverhill are being warned to keep windows and doors shut as around 150 tonnes of rubbish burns at the site.

The blaze at the centre in Homefield Road was reported to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service at 9.36am as members of the public spotted smoke billowing from the centre.

Two fire crews from Wethersfield in Essex and Newmarket are at the scene tackling the flames along with a turntable ladder and support pump from Bury St Edmunds and a command unit and support pump from Ixworth.

A spokesman for the brigade said the blaze has taken hold of 150 tonnes of recycling at the single storey centre.

Speaking at the site, deputy district commander Jon Illingworth said a turntable ladder was in use with a jet on top of the fire and two ground monitors [remote jets] were also in use.

He said: “Once we are happy with the progress we are making with the fire we will start to commit inside. At the moment the decision is it’s still unsafe to go inside.”

He added that the flames had not broken through the roof.

The centre is owned by Waste Recycling Group Plc.
