| The Radcliffe Arms on opening night |
CLOSE encounters of the strange kind occurred in the night sky over Comet country causing neighbours and friends to look up in wonder.
Reports of UFOs chasing one another on Thursday and Friday night have flooded into The Comet as excited readers shared their experiences.
Kully Bains from Baldock said: "Myself and my wife spotted two lights in the sky chasing one another at high speeds on Thursday night. After facebooking friends, some believing and some mocking, we had a laugh over it. However on Friday night they reappeared...Spooky!"
Carol Beaumont from Stevenage said: "I telephoned my daughter who also watched these lights with her family - she seemed to think that it may have been someone on the ground shining laser torches into the night sky - but there was no path to be seen. The shapes changed continually, swirling around, meeting each other then moving around again."
While Stevenage's Kate Page said: "Something strange was definitely happening. I watched it for at least 45 minutes. Two lights were appearing within the clouds chasing each other."
You can however sleep easy tonight. Little green men have not invaded.
The commotion was caused by a new restaurant. Well, two massive WWII search lights at a new restaurant.
The manager of the revamped Radcliffe Arms in Hitchin wanted to give his opening night on Friday a little Hollywood glamour, so he hired the two lights from a specialist in Bristol and they lit up the night sky for hours.
The manager of the new restaurant, Stuart Alder, who spent 18 months renovating the former pub on Walsworth Road, said: "We wanted it to be like Twentieth Century Fox and we had champagne and all the people who have helped to renovate the building were here. It was wonderful.
"The lights were fantastic. We had to redirect air traffic from Luton!
