Anti-phone mast campaigners on the roundabout before permission was granted
CAMPAIGNERS have hit out at a decision to grant permission for a 22m-high mobile phone mast on a roundabout.

Stevenage Borough Council's planning and development committee gave the go-ahead for the mast to be sited at the roundabout at the junction of Six Hills Way and Gresley Way.

Many nearby residents were against the proposals, believing that the mast could have shared an existing site in Long Lane in Aston End.

Mark Tooze, 45, from Barham Road, has criticised what he believes is a lack of planning for mast sharing by the council.

"I certainly think there's not enough site sharing. I don't think that they properly think about sharing.

"I think the council roll over too easily without really challenging whether site sharing has been properly explored by the companies.

"I think there was a real site sharing opportunity here and that opportunity has been lost," he said.

Mr Tooze believes that there are already 19 mobile base stations (transmitters) within a mile radius of Faraday Road, with two more - including the latest one - planned but not built, and another new mast proposed at the junction of Mobbsbury Way and Chells Way.

A spokesman for Stevenage Borough Council said: "I can confirm that we have received an email from Mr Tooze and we will reply to his concerns in the next few days.
