Party Policies: Stevenage District Council Elections 2008

The Labour and Co-operative Party

Ralph Raynor, Labour’s election agent, said: “Labour in Stevenage stands for a better future for our town.  We stand for greater prosperity, more jobs and opportunities for everyone who lives here, better schools for our children and a safer, greener, healthier and cleaner town.  We are already working to deliver our vision of how Stevenage should be.

To fight anti-social behaviour and low level crime, we have introduced Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the town.  Our town centre will be redeveloped to provide better shops, leisure facilities and homes.  We are pressing for more, affordable housing for local people in the west of Stevenage development. Along with local residents, we have fought for the Lister Hospital and are now campaigning for the new investment to reflect local priorities, such as cancer treatment facilities.

We are working to deliver better recycling facilities and unlike the Conservatives in North Hertfordshire we are retaining weekly rubbish collections. We have secured £208m from the Labour government to rebuild and refurbish our secondary schools.  And, year on year, we maintain the lowest average council tax in Hertfordshire.

We have started to deliver, but the work goes on.  Vote Labour in this election to ensure a better future for Stevenage.
