Party Policies: North Herts District Council Elections 2008
The UK Independence Party
We will slash council tax and give local councils control over their budgets by removing the control from central government. We will also let councils keep local business rates.
We will let people call a binding referendum on major local issues, dismantle regional government and return powers to elected county and borough councils, and ensure openness and greater representation by reforming the “cabinet†system in local government.
We will introduce proper border controls and restrict permanent immigration for five years. We will ensure illegal immigrants are deported, and that there is fair, compassionate treatment for law-abiding people who are genuinely fleeing persecution or torture.
We will ensure strict sentencing, zero tolerance of anti-social behaviour, crack down on nuisance neighbours, and build more prisons.
We will provide better public transport, controlled locally, oppose speed cameras which do not reduce accidents, rule out satellite road pricing and stop privatising parking restrictions.
We will restore proper controls on development, allow local planning authorities genuine independence, and protect the Green Belt.
We will give head teachers independence over teaching, discipline and examinations, and encourage school trips, competitive sports and playing fields.
