A spot of Bovver

Hatfield's title hopes suffered a massive dent yesterday when they were beaten 3-1 by struggling Bovingdon.

It was Town's first defeat in the league since last October, but with Met Police winning again, Town are now seven points behind again with a game in hand.

For Hatfield to snatch the title, they must now win their game in hand, beat Met Police when they face each other again and hope the Bushey side slip up elsewhere, whilst Town don't drop any more points.

It's not out of the question, but Town could well have blown their title chances.

On the tenth of november Hatfield Town were 14 points behind the Police and no one was thinking of the league title but a great run gave us hope , we know it will be a hard task to catch them now and the main aim at the beginning of the season was to gain promotion, so lets worry about gaining enough points for promotion first and foremost .

I've previously said elsewhere that I think Hatfield will win promotion this season and they deserve to be at a higher standard.

For a town the size of Hatfield not to have a team in at least the South Midlands League with a ground of their own is a crying shame.

When Town were last in the SML at Gosling, they should have won the title under Malcolm Doctor.

Finishing at least runners-up this seasons looks certain - Town are 10 points above third-placed Standon & Puckeridge with two games in hand.

It's over 15 years since Hatfield last won the Herts Senior County League Premier Division championship in their Roe Hill days.

The previous season - 1990-91 - Mount Grace did a league and cup double, got promoted to the South Midlands League, changed their name to Potters Bar Town and are now established at Ryman League level.

That's what I hope Hatfield will eventually achieve and bring back the glory days of when the club were playing at Stonecross in the Metropolitan League.

Winning the County League title this season and some silverware - hopefully the Aubrey Cup for the first time - would be a fitting reward for all the hard work put in by the players and management team.
